Robert Leatherbarrow course
I had an advanced course from BC glass artist Robert Leatherbarrow organized by Stained Glass Stuff in Ottawa this past August. This five day course focused working with glass powders and his special crackling technique to make pebble pieces, impression wafers and mandellas. I also got some great new ideas for wall hanging glass pieces – always a challenge. I so much enjoy meeting and working with other glass artists at occasions like this.

North Frontenac Back Roads Studio Tour
This fall I participated in the North Frontenac County artists studio tour. It was a beautiful autumn day and I had the good fortune of having my work displayed at the Good Stuff Bakery in bustling downtown Plevna, where I could enjoy the great coffee, and hospitality of my hosts, Jean Heinemann and Sean Sheeham. In the summer months, Good Stuff has some of my jewelry on display and for sale.

Artist in Residency Retreat
I was accepted into the first Artist in Residency Retreat in Batavia New York for a week in August of 1913. Catherine Newell and Karl Herron were the resident professional glass artist in attendance. We stayed at a Buddah retreat together and explored our artistic lives going “Beyond the Familiar”. There were 15 residents who travelled from Australia, Texas, Ireland, Calgary, and across the United States. We shared our love of glass, our inspirations, and our shared experiences.

Open Face Casting
Kevin Tappin taught us a course on open face casting. We used a baby dress to cast. We built our box with plywood, glued down our dress, make the hydroperm casting material, pulled the dress out and filled the mold with coarse glass frit. Several days of drying were followed by two days in the kiln. The second day at the course was spent chipping the plaster casting off and then hours of cold working, staring with a coarse bit on the grinder, followed with a medium bit and then a fine bit. The next couple of hours were spent using the diamond pads to the edge so we had a smooth edge. I tried it a second time at home and made two baby hats and booties. It was lots of fun trying another glass form. I realize that there is a lot to learn in this this field of glass.
